Labor Day is a national holiday celebrated all across the United States.
For some of us, Labor Day means a perfect excuse to get some friends together for a barbecue. For others, it means the last day of summer before returning to school or work. But what is the holiday really all about? Why do we celebrate it, and what are we even celebrating?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is the first Monday in September dedicated to celebrating the social and economic achievements of American workers. It’s still not certain who first created Labor Day, but some sources point to Peter J. McGuire, the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, as the founder. McGuire was also a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor.
The heart of Labor Day started during the height of the Industrial Revolution, just as unions started to form to protect the rights of workers. The first Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City when 10,000 workers took unpaid leave to march from City Hall to Union Square. It wasn’t until 1884 that the first Monday in September was designated as the annual date for the holiday. Ten years later, Congress, spurred by growing labor concerns and the 1894 strike on Pullman railroad company, passed an act making Labor Day a national, legal holiday.

½ oz freshly squeezed lime (approx. half a lime)
3 lime wedges
2 parts chilled soda water
Build in an oversized cabernet wine glass with lots of ice.
Add Grey Goose Vodka and St-Germain. Then squeeze fresh lime and discard. Top with chilled soda water. Stir and garnish with fresh lime wedges and a Grey Goose stirrer.

1 oz fresh sour mix
2 oz Moet Ice Rose
1 oz fresh orange juice

Quicky muddle berries into a cocktail glass. Add remaining ingredients and ice. Stir to combine. Garnish with an edible orchid.

*Coconut-infused syrup: Place equal parts sugar and water in a pot. Add a generous amount of fresh grated coconut and a splash of coconut oil. Boil for five minutes and steep overnight.

*Hibiscus Syrup: Add one hibiscus tea bag to boiling water. Once tea has steeped, add in equal parts white sugar to the tea and stir to dissolve.

Combine all ingredients into cocktail shaker. Shake, then strain over ice and garnish with a chili pepper.

.75 oz fresh lemon juice
.5 oz grenadine
.25 oz Campari
Add all ingredients to a shaker and shake over ice. Strain into highball glass over fresh ice.

1.5 parts Three Olives Rosé Vodka
.75 parts lemon juice
.75 parts grapefruit juice
.75 parts raspberry or simple syrup
.75 parts dry vermouth
Combine all ingredients and one cup of ice in blender. Blend and garnish.
.5 teaspoon grated orange zest
.25 cup kosher salt
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 cups fresh orange juice
1 ripe peach, pitted and coarsely chopped
8 ounces silver tequila
In a small bowl, combine the orange zest, salt, and sugar. Using your fingers, work the zest into the salt and sugar until the mixture is fragrant. Rim four glasses with salt mixture and set aside.
In a blender, combine the lime juice, the orange juice, and the peach chunks and blend. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer. Fill each of the prepared glasses with ice. Pour 2 ounces of tequila into each glass. Top with .5 cup of the juice mixture. Top with club soda, and stir. Garnish with fruit slices, and serve.

2 whole Strawberries
Remove the stops of the strawberries. Place all ingredients into a blender with 1.5 cups of ice and blend until smooth Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a strawberry and orange twist.

Place all ingredients into a blender with 2 cups of ice and blend until smooth.

Ah, Labor Day weekend…summer’s last hurrah. A time to gather together, slap on some sunscreen, hang out at the pool one last time, and have a cookout. In honor of that last hurrah cookout, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite summer recipes from past posts to ease your menu planning along. And, now that I’ve had a good look at some of these again, they may be making an appearance at my own house this weekend. Bonus!
In the Munchies for the Pool category, we have this super simple Black Bean, Corn and Avocado Salsa.
Great to make ahead, it’s fresh summer flavor perfection, and always a hit.
Next up, we have the ever popular Neiman Marcus Dip.
It’s creamy, cheesy, bacony, and people seem to flock to it. Every time I’ve made this, people hover over it and ask for the recipe. (Probably due to the creamy, cheesy, bacony-ness of it, eh?)
In the Salads of the Summer category, we have one of my all time favorite salads…Panzanella. And now, with summer tomatoes at their peak, is THE best time to make it.
Grab some tomatoes and cucumbers from your garden, or if you’re like me, head to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday and grab them from people who actually grow them successfully, and make this salad. You won’t be sorry.

I guess you could even call this recipe “Award Winning”. I posted it as an entry for a contest with Green Bean Delivery, and it won! It’s delicious, so fresh and crisp, and exceptionally pretty, which is always a plus.
Moving into the Main Course Category, in an attempt to move away from the usual burgers and hot dogs (Not that there’s anything wrong with burgers and hot dogs, I’m just throwing some other ideas out there…), we have these tasty Moroccan Chicken Kebabs .
I often overlook kebabs when I plan a cookout, but they really are perfect. You can make them ahead, you have your fresh veggies in there, and they are easy to serve to a crowd!

Living in Indiana, I’d be in trouble if I didn’t highlight a summer corn recipe. This Tomato and Corn Custard Pie is my favorite tomato pie recipe…and I’ve made a lot of tomato pies.
And, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a pasta salad of some sort in a summer recipe collection. This BLT Macaroni Salad was a recent post, and a keeper.
I have a soft spot for a good BLT, so in turn, I have a soft spot for this delicious salad.
Finally, in the “OK, I’m Stuffed, but What’s a Cookout Without Some Sort of Dessert” category, we have a simply delicious Sour Cream Pound Cake with Berries and Whipped Cream .
Just old-fashioned and really tasty. It’s a classic, and there’s a reason why it never goes out of style. It’s delicious!
Finally, to close things out, I bring you my favorite summer pie. This Lemon Icebox Pie is summer perfection, like a pie full of sunshine. Corny? Yes…but it’s true.
Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope it’s filled with fun and relaxation for you and your family and I’d like to share some of our favorite recipes for this weekend. To start I’ll share my little brother’s favorite recipe from these three, Peach Hot Link Skewers. My brother Laith loves spicy food a lot. Like, a lot. So, even though he and I are pretty much the only ones who end up eating it I make a nice smokey and spicy peach glaze for the hot links and coat them before grilling and then reapply the glaze while it’s being grilled. This recipe calls for grilled fruit which, when I made it the first time, I was worried they wouldn’t be good, but I actually found that I really like grilled peaches and plums a lot. Plus, they go really well with our Hot Links, and I always like a good excuse to have more Hot Links! Oh, one last thought, this would still be really good without the heat. Switch the Hot Links out for our Jumbo Beef Franks and take out the cayenne pepper and the smoked paprika and you should get just the sweet of the glaze.
The second recipe is grilled kufta, it’s a classic in our house. The key is to use freshly picked parsley and try to remove as many stems as you can from the leaves. This is… tedious, to say the least but, anything worth doing is worth doing right so ugh, get pluckin’! Once that part is over, chop some green onions into bite sized pieces and then slice them up in a food processor. My mom helped me make this and she said, “Make you sure mention in the blog to only put parsley in the processor and then take it out and process the green onion by itself!” So. Do that. I think it’s because you want to make sure that green onion gets sliced into tiny pieces, and that can be hard because it gets very wet after being processed.
The final recipe is the Cowboy Baked Beans. This is a really simple baked beans recipe, but it’s probably one of my favorites of the bunch. Combine 2 cans of vegetarian baked beans with 2 cups of brown sugar and toss in some sliced campfire grillers. It’s smokey, it’s sweet, it’s easy, and you end up with baked beans in the end, so I call it a win! Whatever you do this weekend make sure that you enjoy your time with your family and make sure you relax. Cause, ya’know, that’s the whole point of this weekend!
For the Peach Hot Link Skewers
2 firm ripe Peaches cut into wedges
4 firm ripe Plums cut int wedges
8-12 mini sweet peppers or 1 large bell pepper cut into squares
1) In a mixing bowl, combine preserves, lime zest, lime juice, oil, ginger, paprika, and cayenne. Set aside
2) Cut Hot Links into bite sized pieces. Skewer fruit, peppers, and hot links.
3) Put preserve mix into a non-stick skillet and heat on low until melted and viscous.
4) Using a basting brush paint the preserve mixture over the skewers on both sides.
5) Grill over medium heat, flipping half way to apply more preserve mixture.
6) Remove from the grill and enjoy!
1 bunch of parsley, leaves removed from the stems
1 bunch of green onions, bottoms removed
1) after removing leaves from stems, put parsley leaves into food processor and pulse 7-10 times or until finely chopped. Remove to a mixing bowl.
2) after removing bottoms from green onions, pulse in a food processor 7-10 times or until finely chopped. Remove to the same mixing bowl.
3) Add meat to mixing bowl and combine until homogeneous.
4) Grill at medium heat, flipping once throughout
5) serve with Salata or spinach salad and enjoy!
2 28 oz cans of Vegetarian Baked Beans
1) After slicing the grillers, cook over medium high heat until grillers are cooked through and browning slightly remove from heat
2) In a pot, pour both cans of baked beans and heat on medium high. Once bubbling add both cups of brown sugar, cook until brown sugar is melted and homogenous.
3) Add Campfire Grillers and cook until hot.
